World map - Satellites

Simon Brown

Hi All,

The satellite data has a new format which I should use going forward https://celestrak.org/NORAD/documentation/gp-data-formats.php called OMM, this replaces TLE.

A good place to try this out would maybe be the World Map, I know someone did ask for this in the past. An example with be the ISS or maybe a NOAA satellite.

So - any interest in satellite plotting in the World Map?

So, I started adding a basic satellite display a few days ago. Still got a lot to do but the basics work, importantly support for the new data format known as OMM.

Simon.

Why use that format?

I was considering the XLS option as it is more widely supported.

Hi Simon,

I presume that the map that is part of the satellite module in SDRC will also be using OMM at some point as well.

You sure find ways to keep busy. Thank you!

yes,

At some stage I'll switch over to OMM from TLE. It's not a pressing issue, I just wanted to be sure I know what to do when the time comes.

Yes, it was that information which led me to XLS. The other formats seem grossly inflated.

I see that OMM itself is in at least two different formats:

XML: OMM XML format including all mandatory elements.
KVN: OMM KVN format including all mandatory elements.
JSON: OMM keywords for all GP elements in JSON format.
JSON-PRETTY: OMM keywords for all GP elements in JSON pretty-print format.

Which variant did you choose?

HI, very interesting and excellent "sat_idea" Simon,

As a satellite user having also made for me a small soft unfortunately only numerical for my AZ/EL and EME/SUN pointing with kepler files in 2L format (sat graphically I was not able...), surely this future very good update of World Map, with satellites, will be interesting if you can also use some more rotors (for EL AZ)... or just delete all rotors now in WORLD MAP and use only HAMLIB for rotor management which implements almost all of them with one single configuration.
With a single programming, you will be able to use all rotors with HAMLIB.... is just an idea, but without command to automate AZ/EL it would be without a leg...

Simon's World Map is "getting closer and closer" to Geochron.... ;-) ;-)

Hi Frank,

I'll look at Hamlib's rotator support and the licencing. I don't want to write a full rotator program but Hamlib may make a basic program quite easy.

As for Geochron - I've been writing programs like this before they started with their computer-based solutions. It's only now that i have time for this program.
