Won't playback from external drive
Rick Kenneally
Hi All,
I haven't yet tried to debug this issue, but I ran into a problem where I've installed SDR Console on a new laptop, I plugged in a Sandisk SSD drive (USB-C) full of recordings from a different laptop, and when I try to play back the recordings from the SSD, it just hangs (spinning blue ring cursor). If I copy the files from the SSD to the new laptop's internal drive (also SSD), playback works fine. Unfortunately the internal drive doesn't have room for many recordings, so I'd really prefer to playback directly from the SSD. I'll try to debug this evening after work. Anything obvious I should check? Thanks! Rick Wilton, CT |

Maybe it's a bandwidth issue?
Try a different USB port, maybe try USB3 if you have one.
I wonder whether it's anti-virus software?

Unlikely bandwidth - it's a USB-C port - much faster than the "older" USB ports on the laptop.
I'll investigate anti-virus. But I can read/write to the drive no problem. It's odd that I can playback files on the internal drive, but can't playback the exact same files on the external drive. Thanks! |

While Console is spinning, just look at the active processes, I've seen anti-virus scanning files as they are opened.

Problem solved! Reformatted the external SSD from ExFAT to NTFS. Works now.
Thanks! |

Odd - I would have thought that any format would work, I just talk to the file system via an API.
Glad it now works.

If the drive is USB2 all you get is about 10 megabytes per second. To get high speeds you need a USB 3 or USB 4 port rated for the speed you need, cables and hubs to match, and NAS or external drives to match. {^_^} On 20230316 13:10:19, Rick Kenneally

Probably MS put more time into NTFS to make it faster. {^_^} On 20230316 14:52:46, Simon Brown
