Stuttering, revisited

Rick Kenneally

Returning to this issue.

I record using a Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen, and play back on that laptop or on a Lenovo P1 Gen 3 Intel i7-10750H @ 2.6 GHz 6 core.

Both devices suffer from stuttering in the audio when monitoring live or when playing back recordings.

The T14 stutters when plugged in or when on battery.  Problem is largely alleviated if I open a youtube video in a browser and put it on continuous (muted) play in the background.  This was a tip from Paul Cianciolor on this forum.

The P1 doesn't seem to stutter when plugged in, but does stutter badly when on battery.  I had a particularly frustrating time this morning trying to listen to some recordings while commuting.  Network was offline, so youtube wasn't an option.  Running other video apps in the background made no difference.

David Jackson said this is a throttling issue, but I've not yet descended into trying different tools for unlocking the throttling.

Simon asked for the MMCSS log files.  Here's mine from this morning when stuttering was bad:

06:26:59.972: RX1 Audio> MMCSS: Multimedia Class Scheduler service
06:26:59.972: RX1 Audio>   AvSetMmThreadCharacteristics(Pro Audio) handle = x00000954, task index = 41
06:26:59.972: RX1 Audio>   AvSetMmThreadPriority(2)    status = 1
06:26:59.973: RX1 Audio>   AvQuerySystemResponsiveness status = 1, value = 20
06:26:59.973: RX1 Audio>

I'm hoping there's a setting or workaround to solve this issue that won't require too much messing with the thermal control of the laptops, and it would be great to remove the need to run youtube videos.

Thanks!

Rick

Hi,

I have a laptop which also pops / stutters. With luck will be working on this by Thursday. Also a Lenovo.

A number of us receive weather satellite data directly from a rebroadcast satellite with rates of 60/70/80 Mbps. This is UDP data so anything missed matters - no rebroadcasts. There are a number of steps we take to address this, one is buffering with a RAMdisk perhaps not relevant here, but another is looking at interrupt latency. There's a program you can use to measure this:

http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

but that seems to have vanished. My Web page is here if it's of interest:

https://www.satsignal.eu/wxsat/dpc/index.html

and the program used is "DPC Latency Checker". Google gives various sources. The dpclat-V1.4.0.exe I have is 306,928 bytes.

Sorry I didn't reply, David.

Thanks for the suggestions.

We're (at least I am) not missing data.  The stuttering is an audio problem only.  When I make an mp3 audio recording, it is free of the stuttering that I'm hearing when listening directly to SDR audio output.  The data recordings are complete - they play back stutter-free under the right conditions.

So it's not a disk problem or a data problem or a capture, it's an audio/playback problem.

Thanks

Rick

Thank you very much, Simon!  It's a great product.  The stuttering is the only issue I've encountered. In my introduction to SDRs this year, SDR Console has been amazing.  I used it to make hours of MWDX recordings from a recent Caribbean trip and am now spending part of every evening reviewing and logging.

BTW - I love the "Navigator" - crazy simple and very effective. Best of all, the whole app is easy to use on a laptop.

Hi Simon,

Any progress or hints on this issue?  I'm trying to listen to a recording while disconnected from network, so can't run youtube in background. The audio stuttering is really bad.

Is it unique to Lenovo?

Thanks!

Have you gone into your power settings and set it to a videos or presentation mode? Turn OFF throttling, if you can.

Someone may have mentioned this before, if so I apologise.

I had a similar problem with stuttering and concluded that in my case the problem was network bandwidth.

My Lenovo (main laptop) and most of the machines on the network were on a 1000Mb switch but the spur
to the Win 7 machine that carried the SDR dongle and the laser printer (to reduce EMI it was as far away as possible) was via a 100Mb
switch.

Replacing the 100Mb switch with a 1000Mb switch fixed the problem.

May be worth bearing in mind ...

Dave
