Simon's worldmap - seems blocked no matter what?
Trying to use Simon's worldmap here and anything that relies on outside data like space weather, satellites, aurora etc is not working.
I'm using Windows 7 Pro, SP1 and Windows Firewall (not windows defender) and have Avast free AV installed.
I have added inbound and outbound rules for SimonsWorldMap.exe in windows firewall and temp turned of the Avast features, all to no avail.
Is there anything else I am missing?
I assume hitting refresh on the satellites/spaceweather/aurora should load data from the web?

Even with windows firewall turned off and avast disabled, still no good.
Is there any way to traclog what is going on?

I had exactly same setup as you (except Windows 10 not 7). Windows firewall. Avast Free antivirus. Always worked fine. I've never needed to add any firewall rules for Simon's map to work as it should. The info just appears on its own. No need to "refresh".Trying to use Simon's worldmap here and anything that relies on outside data like space weather, satellites, aurora etc is not working.

I now have Win 11 with no Avast and just using Win11 Defender for all security. Just tried it out as not run the map for a while. Again, works fine, no firewall rules needed.
I guess you already tried full uninstall of Simon's Map then reinstall with latest version?

Downloaded and installed this morning. Still no joy, logfile attached.

This problem occurs because Windows 7 is not configured to support the TLS 1.2 protocol, and the Federated partner disabled support for TLS 1.0 and 1.1 in their on-premises environment.
Error "12029" is a WinHTTP error code that indicates that a socket connection failed because encrypted communication could not be established.

I'm using Windows 7 Pro, SP1 and Windows Firewall (not windows defender) and have Avast free AV installed.Steve. Just wondering why you have not upgraded that machine to Win10? AFAIK it's still free to do so and I don't believe there would be any disadvantage? Win 10 is far superior in ever way I believe?

Win 10's GUI is a pain in the asterisk to configure to be even
remotely sane. (11 is even worse.) My desktop is not a phone. My
desktop does not have a touch screen. I know about the PITA
because I managed to get it mostly tamed.

Interesting, thanks. I will look at that tomorrow (well, later today in fact) and see how I get on.
In the article snippet below it states to set the defaultsecureprotocols to TLS 1.1 & 1.2 only. Is that likely to effect any other apps I might have?
Would setting to 0x0000AA0 be OK?
Steve
In order to use TLS 1.2 by default for WinHttp API apps, add the DefaultSecureProtocols = 0x00000A00
REG_DWORD parameter to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\WinHttp
(on Windows x64: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\WinHttp
).
Here are the possible values of DefaultSecureProtocols option which defines allowed protocols for WinHTTP connections:
- 0x00000A0 – a default value allowing SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 for WinHTTP only
- 0x0000AA0 — allows using TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 in addition to SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0
- 0x00000A00 – allows TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 only
- 0x00000800 – allows TLS 1.2 only
