SDR Console on Mac M1 with Parallels #sdrplay #usb #sdrconsole

Mike Kaylor

Has anyone been able to get SDR Console to work in Parallels on a Mac M1 using an SDRDuo or RSPdx?

SDR Console loads fine but crashes when you start it.  I believe this is because of USB BULK TRANSFER MODE.  This had to be turned on in SDRUno, otherwise it acts exactly the same.  I don't see any switch for this in SDR Console.

Thank you,
Mike - W5SSN

Hi Mike,

I only support Console on x86 hardware. I doubt it's bulk transfer mode as this is used by the SDRplay service. I just expect that Console is not happy.

The reason I only support Console on x86 is that I don't have the time and don't have any Mac hardware other than an old Mac-MINI which runs Windows 7.

The only thing I can suggest is that you buy a refurbished Windows PC; there's very value to be had these days.

I agree with Simon. Somehow the Mac only guys who like my Windows applications that use peripheral coms have tons of problems or ones that slip up.
Mac badged usb chips, soldered in ssd, coded and matched to the specific unit serialized internal components. Its a Windows world. No matter what the Linux guys say.
Mac, ios guys seem to have more money to spend or their pockets are just a lot lighter than mine.
Easy enough to load a Windows OS on a Mac. Try that the other way around on a man's pc. Unless you go the Hackintosh route. Or as we say. Screw Macintosh and Apple.

Sorry you feel that way about a far superior piece of hardware and OS.  Hey but what do I know…..  only been working on IT for 40yrs.

I asked a simple question concerning running on a hypervisor not a lecture.

IMO,

Mac hardware is OK, I just don't like the way Apple treats developers. As for the current chips being superior - doesn't the user make the difference? Yes, the new range from Apple is good but the flexibility we have with non-Apple hardware is better. Apple prices are insane!

Will be interesting to see the 14th & 15th gen chips from Intel.

I'll take your 40 years and offer you 43, soon 44.

No.

I hope that's free enough of lecture for you. ;-)

Then you should know that you do not purchase a computer to run its OS. You purchase a computer that runs the applications you need. If you have that much experience in IT I'd think you'd be able to figure out the problems yourself if it can be done.

My personal experience with SDR dongles is that they are not usually very happy with virtual machines, particularly with VirtualBox and Windows host. And I've not tried in the last 2 or 3 years. Life's too short to keep beating my head on an old problem. I believe I'd seen a reference to a success; but, I don't know where that was. A NUC style computer can run SDRConsole if you don't go hog wild with what you demand of it.

(Snark) First contact with computers was 1963 at Univ of Michigan in a MAD language class that had access to an IBM 7090 and a lot of punch card machines.

The first on the job contact was an HP machine in about 1974, wrote a circuit analysis program for it. Figure that as the real start of my sojourn in the dark side and how many years is that? (RF engineer at the same time.)

Mike,

Just f.y.i. (and to stay out of the Mac vs. Windows quibble popping up every few weeks in every forum on earth :-)
SDRPlay is on the verge to release a Mac program for their hardware called SDRConnect. It should also run on silicon.

SDRPLay have been talking about a MAC version for a long time. Don't hold your breath waiting for that.

I get the impression SDRConnect is using a multi-platform framework such as QT, can't remember why I came to this conclusion.

Having written multi-platform code myself, albeit ~25 years ago, the support could be a nightmare, especially on Linux. This was a major reason why I decided to concentrate on the most widely used platform (Windows) and try to get it working well on that platform.

25 years ago, my code ran on: VAX/VMS, AS400, 6 x UNIX, 4 x Linux, Windows Server and probably a few more. Somehow, I stayed sane...

"sane" and "programmer" may be mutually exclusive qualities.
