SDR console #qo100 #pluto #sdrconsole

Hello, can anyone explain why SDR console frequently locks up when using with Adalm Pluto on QO 100? I am running windows10, I have tried two different PC’s and a laptop, freezes on all devices. I have tried 3.1 and 3.2 variants of consol, to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

There are quite a few people on here using Pluto with great success. I'm no expert by any means as I don't have one, however, I note that the data interface for the Pluto is USB 2.0 which I think I am also right in saying also supplies power, so a very likely culprit would be inadequate power being delivered to the USB input. That is where I would start looking. The fact that you experience lockups on several different PCs to me points out an issue either with the Pluto itself or the USB 2.0 data or power. Suggest that initially you troubleshoot around this area. Like are you using a hub, for example? Powered? Adequate power? Or direct to PC? Again, adequate power?

No doubt Sigi will be along shortly with some more thoughts on this.

Hi. I am using a usb to Ethernet adapter to my local network, and the Pluto is powered by a separate usb power supply in the other usb socket. So, should be plenty of power. Thanks. Phil G8PJH

rev b without ground modding? (just one tiny wire bridge inside needed over L7)

3.1 and3.2 re soooo outdated ;-)

use newer version please (at least last BETA .. see simons page)

several users had reboot (lock-up) problems on the revision b ... xyl in kitchen switches light on and pluto in shack reboots .. that was caused by pluto rev b having two different ground planes and a spike (from the xyl switching neon light on) could travel inside the pluto causing a reboot (the power selctor switch in rev b was very very sensitive)

a simple short wire bridge inside between GND and PGND solves that problem

next is .. if only powered from usb cable from pc a longer (and maybe a bit thinner) cable can cause such a power drop that the pluto does not get enough to run stable .. power from a smartphone charger on the second port makes it more stable (sidenore i run my plutos now for a loooong time only from pc powered but with a short cable)

in most cases the pluto runs fine only powered from pc but if you have a bigger distance and a longer usb cable then think about feeding pluto external

feel free to ask for more details about setting up pluto with console

Hi, I have the Rev d running with a a Leo Bodnar GPSDO. The supply to the Pluto is from an internal PSU in the case I built, very short lead.

Simon Brown

Post a screenshot of it on any PC. I'd like to see this.

I'm sure it'll be the power supply.

Edited

you are aware that the leo has to run first AND BE STABLE (LOCKED AND SETTLED DOWN) ... BEFORE YOU BOOT PLUTO
... maybe your grounds are not well bonded causing a spike on power rail(s)??
also usb power may be an issue (longer cable?? several usb devices rattling on the same 5v lne??)
also check your usb cbel .. the plugs wear out if often used ... if in question .. replace (any data interruptions or wiggly 5v power causing sdr console to hang within a second or causing the pluto to do a reboot (also console hangs then)
in normal the rev c/d is "bulletproof" means it is a lot more stable as the older rev b (if you did not do gnd modding on rev b)
the best is ... you "empty log file ... then if sch problem creeps around the corner ... save logfile and send to group
and/or a screenshot from console
rev /c/d normally does not have big problems ... what fw is in your pluto? ... any moddings done (besides connecting leo to external in)??
we need a few more details from you to help you
ok .. a rev d with leo .. on network
a guess a router involved? what model/brand??
are all your ethernet ports switched/setup to same speed?? otherwise the router may cause a break
""" are the kids downloading a film""" (or other things done that may cause a break in data transfer or a higher load in your network)??
even a damned (sorry) windoze update may cause a break in the data transfer betwenn pluto and the pc cause that is doe over the same network cable (at least towards pc) and talking cpu load
and if  that is just a tny bit too long the data transfer between pluto and sdr console may hang (either breaks .. or a totally hang)
when it stops .. can you still reach it via the network? ... try to open the info.html on 192.168.2.1 (replace with own number if changed from default)

Hi, my set up has its own dedicated PSU’s, plenty of Amps in reserve. Grounding is good. I have built in a timer that allows the Leo Bodnar to power up and achieve sat lock before it switches on the Pluto. Yes it is on a network, butI have used it direct to a laptop via a usb to Ethernet adapter, and it still freezes. Pluto is original firmware (v .32 I think), I haven’t updated because I believe updating the Pluto can be a bit hit and miss. I haven’t tried reaching it when locked up. I have now up dated to latest SDR console version (3.3 beta) it is better now, but still stutters every now and again. I’ll empty the log file.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Sounds to me like the bandwidth is too high, that's why I'm asking for a screenshot.
