Remote Receivers

George Stein - NJ3H

I am trying to connect to remote receivers this morning.  In the past, it has worked straight away.  Not so this morning (1644z).

Please see the attached picture.  I get this or similar regardless of the remote station selected.

Can someone please help me? Thanks

Yes,

I would like to see the logfile. The servers do work - I use the same server myself. Anyway, there's more info in the logfile so start, try to connect, when it fails get the logfile: Software Defined Radio (sdr-radio.com) .

Hi Simon,

Attached is the logfile and a popup from malwarebytes.

I have never had an issue like this in the past.

I see where I can set up an exclusion, but to do this for every remote SDR seems really excessive.  What would you do in this situation?

Thanks for looking into this.

Malwarebytes is a bit of a problem, it's over keen.

I think you may be able to tell it that SDR Console is OK, anyway this is the problem.

Simon.

When I try to connect to some remote receivers, I get a message that says:  Connection error Connection refused (server not listening on the selected port).  I am not getting the Malwarebytes popup message after adding SDRC to the Allow List. I am trying to connect to Server:  K4BPM and Server:  KA1GJU Super Station #2.

However, I can connect to your 5 receivers at Simon's Public Server with no problem.

I also have Windows defender Firewall.  I went to the screen that list all apps (programs).  I see sharp, uno and many other apps.  However I can not find Console or SDRC, or any other variation of the program name anywhere in the list.  I don't know why the firewall would all of a sudden be causing this issue, it that is even the culprit.

As recently as three weeks ago, I could connect to the aforementioned servers.

So I am hoping that you have some more great ideas that I can try.

Have a good day Simon.

George

Connection refused ==> Server not running or Firewall somewhere. Could be your ISP.

George, I suggest you start with disabling Malwarebytes and the Windows defender firewall, then test the connections to the remote receivers. If this works, it will prove the problem is on your PC. Now, one at a time, re-enable Malwarebytes and Windows defender firewall to figure out which is causing the problem. Once you figure that out, you can make the required configuration changes to allow access to the remote receivers.

If you still cannot connect to remote receivers with both disabled, your ISP may be blocking the connection.

My money would be your problem is Malwarebytes...

Agreed,

Malwarebytes doesn't like Kriss's server.

Kriss Kliegle KA1GJU

What if somebody connects that is on the Black List?
I have some entries in there due to the idiot that occupies 2 SDR's at max bandwidth for FT8 all day and night.

73 Kriss KA1GJU
PS Just tested Super Station #2, works fine for me.

Just for confirmation Kriss, all your stations are working fine from here...

I disabled Malwarebytes and Microsoft Defender and I still get the same message I posted earlier when I try to connect to Kriss's servers, unfortunately.  A month ago all worked fine and now it doesn't.  I cannot connect with K4BPM wither, but other servers I can connect with.

I hate not being able to use the Super Stations.  This is very disappointing.

There must be some setting somewhere that is causing this.  I just don't know where to find it.

George Stein - NJ3H

I have attached 2 pictures that show the current settings in windows.  All Malwarebyte options seem to be on (web protection, malware protection, ransomware protection, exploit protection). Disabling one at a time made no difference.

I notice in the attached pictures there are mentions of rules that can be set.  How does one write a rule and what does it contain?  Would that even have an impact on this issue?

It appears some of the servers out there have something set differently than others.  I would just like to know how to overcome those settings.

Thanks,
George

George, this is a network issue. The challenge is to locate where. From your screen captures, I see that the Windows firewall is configured to the default setting of allowing all outbound connections. So it should not be related to your problem.

This leaves Malwarebytes or your ISP as possibilities. I still suspect it is Malwarebytes. You could try uninstalling it for another test. Then re-install it.

Who is your ISP, and what make / model router do you have?

I would be happy to help you troubleshoot to find out when the problem is. We could do a remote support session where you give me access to your PC so I can run some tests. I see we are in the same timezone. And I am retired too, so I have time. Let me know.

Look to see if Malware Bytes has a way to set exceptions. That might save some headaches.

Dennis, JoAnne, and others:

Thanks for the offer to help.  Dennis I have sent you an email directly.

I uninstalled MBytes and the problem went away. Re-installing it, the problem stayed gone (able to connect).  However, when I re-registered for the premium license I bought back in December, the problem returned.  So i found a way to add Kriss's website to the Allow List and no all is good with the world (if it was really that simple).

So what i don't know is why some remote receives cause the connection problem and others don't?  At this point the only answer I have is the power of the Allow List.

After getting hit with a ransomware virus last December, I have to do everything in my power to don't have that happen again.

And to all a good night and a big thanks.

Regards,
George

Port scan from the Internet how I set things up and check that router firewall port open and port forwarding and device firewall accepts traffic on port.

My guess is that the confusion is caused because most remote receivers use the default TCP port of 50101, but some, like Kriss's, use other ports (50101, 50102, 50104, etc), and these are the receivers you had problems connecting to. So additional exceptions for these ports will need to be added. Not sure, but Malwarebytes might have the ability to add a range of addresses so you could create an exception for ports 50101-50110, for example.
