Audio Distortion/Scanning Issues

Les Rayburn

I’m having an issue since installing the latest updates to Windows 10. I use SDR-Console and my AirSpy HF+ Discovery to “scan” the FM band, reporting RDS receptions to Rabbit Ears website.

The software automatically advances 200 kHz every seven seconds. Playback is normal sometimes, but on some frequench changes it will become distorted and unable to detect RDS too.

I know this must be related to to buffers, etc…but so far the fix has alluded me. I’ve restarted the computer, adjusted buffer settings, etc. no joy.

Can someone give me some tips on how to best troubleshoot this?

Hi,
  1. Attach a screenshot so I can see what you're doing, ideally while audio is distorted.
  2. Make sure the Receive DSP panel is visiable.
  3. make sure the HF+ settings in the ribbon bar are visible.
  4. When I see the screenshot, I'll get back to you.

Might this have something to do with the the bandwidth visible in the waterfall and the 0.2MHz step upwards falling too close to the edge of the screen and causing the distortion? Perhaps experimenting with the waterfall zoom settings might help? I know that stepping through frequencies using Console with my HF+ Discovery will cause distortion when the tuned frequency falls too near the edges of the waterfall, but clicking on the centre frequency button clears up the distortion. I am using Windows 11, if it makes any difference.

I'm curious to know how you are making SDR Console "scan", as I didn't think there was a scanner facility available in Console. You mention Rabbit Ears - I've heard a little about this, but not sure it's available for us in Europe and quite how it works. Does Rabbit Ears have some standalone software that somehow enables SDR Console to scan in 0.2MHz steps? If so, can this also be adjusted to 0.1MHz steps, to reflect our frequency spacing in Europe?

Also, I'm assuming this scanning behaviour wouldn't be compatible with recording IQ files for later playback, as the tuned frequency is changing every few seconds?
