Console v3.2 and 3.3 beta freezing while connecting to remote SDR's #sdrserver

Rob Q

Hi,
How come every time I want to connect to a V3 server (public or LAN), that SDR-Console will just freeze up and turn white with (Not Responding) in the title bar?
I've uninstalled it, rebooted, installed it again, rebooted, no change.
Is this program not compatible with Windows 11? Sure, I'd expect to see this if I was on a WiFi connection but I'm using a Gigabit Ethernet connection for my home network. At first I thought it was because of my internet connection, but it shouldn't do this in my LAN.

Running 3.3 here, Win11. Not had any crashes. Also been running test versions for many weeks. Again no crashes.

Just tested with range of remote radios. Also no problems. Think quite few others here also using Win11 and not seen reports of any issues. Sorry, not much help I know.

So to be clear, works fine on USB connected local radios for you but not on any that are LAN connected or remote servers via internet? Or do you also have local LAN radios? My main radio here is Hermes Lite 2 connected by LAN via hub.

Yeah it works perfectly on a USB connected local radio (I have an SDRPlay RSPdx) but once I set it up as a server and try connecting to it from a different system in the house, it won't work. Same with any other radios out on the internet.

Okay, that's weird. I removed it completely and took out any entries in Windows Firewall and reinstalled SDR-Console v3.3 and now it's connecting to remote SDR's on the internet again. I find the buffer is kinda bad with the remote streams though.

Have you confirmed that the windows firewall on both systems is allowing the connection? You might try turning off the firewall on both systems, and test.

I'm sure you have, but just checking that you read all the notes on this page? (Including the Firewall setup that Dennis mentions).

Ah,

Firewall was my suggestion - also maybe anti-virus of similar was locking the software.

What buffer? In the ribbon bar, Home, Radio, Server Options you can increase the buffering.

Hi Simon, it's this buffer. I find it plays for a tiny bit, then it stops, then plays for a tiny bit, then stops. It does this no matter what the setting is at. 50ms or 500ms, it makes no difference. Just the pauses are a little longer with the higher value.

Would this be the case if I want to connect to other peoples radios?

If you want to connect to another computer the firewall will get in your way unless you allow the application running on each computer to access the network.

Hi,

That bandwidth (1 MHz) may be too high.

Usually, windows will allow all outbound connections, so connecting to other people's servers should work. But, because I have no idea what changes have been made to the firewall configuration by you or by the installation of any software, I cannot say if the firewall is the issue. But turning it off and testing a connection to a server, local or others, will let you know if the firewall is the problem.

The only freezes I've seen are while anti-virus is scanning DLLs. The next beta (Monday) has great improvements in this area.

funny story about lan/wlan and sdr console server

if i connect to a server (example simons public server) i can do that with my laptop connected to lan or connected via wireless lan to my router

(on lan i get 75 kc bw and on wlan i get 50 kc without dropping packets)

a friend tried the same but .. only  lan works

if he connects HIS laptop via wireless it does not work anymore (empty spectrum and it stops service after a few seconds)

if he uses lan it works like mine

any ideas???

So, what I've done was that I followed everything in here (links below) and put my laptop on a wired connection and my Windows 11 system connected to it instantly. LAN seems to be working but as for the WAN side, everything is very choppy still.
Optimizing Ethernet Adapter Settings for Maximum Performance – FlexRadio
4 Easy Ways to Optimize Ethernet Settings For Gaming (windowsreport.com)
I never changed anything with the firewall on Windows or the router.
Right now, I'm streaming my RSPdx at 2 MHz bandwidth and listening to VOA1 on 11720 kHz and it's not stuttering. Stuttering on the WAN side, could it be the quality of my internet connection?

Rob Q

Is there a workaround for that if a wired connection isn't available, Simon?

Do Not Use WiFi For Audio. That would also mean don't use it for streaming RF either. WiFi periodically goes wonkity and slaps in tenth second delays or more. Just Don't. Not now not ever. It is guaranteed to generate heartburn and pain. (Linus Sebastian of LTT.com just posted a video slamming a Sony sound bar that uses WiFi and features drop outs. He took a deep dive into diagnosing it. It fairly entertaining given the SDR tools he used.)

Is your WAN wired or wireless? (Mine is wireless - and hopeless for serious low latency audio streaming uses from time to time. Weather can be deadly.)

What speed is your WAN? 2 MHz 16 bit samples = 64 Mbps WAN requirement.
