Minimal SDRC Interface

Bill Nollman

Hi again. Making good progress running SDRC with the ELAD S3 and now recording at 16 bit. 6GB/minute which is 25% smaller than with the native ELAD SW2 GUI, NICE! Now I'm trying to bring the CPU and GPU usage down as much as possible. The laptop is an older i7 which normally records with SW2 at under 20% CPU. SDRC is running at 55% or higher and the Nvidia GPU1 at 90%. I've tried turning off the RDS, signal meter display and waveform color fill, minimizing the DSP window and even sliding the waterfall/waveform window all the way in each direction.

Are there any other ways to run SDRC with minimal system resources? Maybe a mini-mode or way to turn off the waterfall and/or waveform? The plan here is to run SDRC 24/7 for a week while recording 24MHz captures and RDS Autologger software (the RDS database in SDRC will help me decide which 24MHz captures to delete). So it's going to be running mostly unattended and I'd like to try and keep it from overheating without external coolers and tricks.

Thanks,
Bill Nollman

Close the task manager, enable Statistics: Ribbon bar, View, Waterfall Extras.

Reduce FFT resolution.

Now take a screenshot.

Interesting... that brings down the CPU and even more the GPU but I see that the whole waveform (top and bottom) jumps up about 15 dBm. It doesn't seem to affect weak signals as the S/N ratio is the same. Is it just a display inconvenience or is weak signal reception going to be negatively affected? Screen shots are attached.

Purely visual.

If you ever have time and bandwidth a 5 minute recording would be great for my test files.

Waterfall speed takes a lot of cpu load

Simon, here you go. 5 minutes (and 30GB) of the most uninteresting radio market in the US. Plenty of big signals, Low Power signals, HD signals and little room for DX. Which is what makes SDR's and DXpeditions so much fun! In fairness I hear the Euro dial is even worse. And, if I turn the antenna 45 degrees things aren't quite as bad.

Great stuff! Everyone else - please don't download until I've got the files.

What kind of WAV-files are these? Does not work in SDR++, SDR-Sharp nor SDRUno.

Simon Brown

These are IQ format - SDR data, not audio. I expect that they are in WAV RF64 format - this allows files to be bigger than 2GB. Many programs haven't bothered adding support for WAV RF64, if so complain to your friendly programmer(s) 🙂 .

Sorry, I should have mentioned that in my posting. They are 24MHz IQ files (WBFM 88-108MHz) captured from an ELAD S3, recorded with SDRC v3.2 at the 16 bit setting. Use SDRC v3.2 to play them back. You may find that an SSD/NVMe/M.2 or new generation USB3 disk is required as the files record and playback at around 100MB/sec. Otherwise playback will most certainly skip or freeze.

I knew they were not audio (but IQ-data). RF64, OK. Good to know.

Simon Brown

Check out the Data File Editor - can create WAV from WAV RF64.

🙂

Thanks, all downloaded, great for testing. Canadian FM is a very different beast, some great Jazz.

Hello Bill, I started to download and had lots of Network failures, then at 7GB of 7.5GB on the first file I got the following error.

Failed – no file, is this just because of too many downloads?

Regards

Hi Conrad, it's Microsoft OneDrive. It should work. It's not my favorite cloud file service but it's where I have plenty of free space. I guess try it again and it that doesn't work I can try loading them to a friends Dropbox. Just email me offlist and we can give that a try.
