I found the rogue port, it was COM44 which was the device that is now COM6. The problem with N1MM+ is now resolved.

You can use device manager to view the COM ports on the system. BUT it may not be telling you the whole story unless it tell it too. There could be "hidden" devices you cannot see. You would think it is as simple as clicking on the "View" menu in device manage and selecting the "Show hidden devices" option. But this does not always show all hidden devices. So try this: 1. Open a DOS window as administrator 2. Enter set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 3. Enter start devmgmt.msc The device manager will open. But even though you entered the command to show all hidden devices in the DOS window the hidden device will not be shown until you go back to the "View" menu and select "Show hidden devices". This will show ALL hidden devices now. Now if you see some old ports that do not belong on the system you can delete them. I added some screen capture to help. Device manager 1 & 2 are befog using the "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" option Device manager 3 & 4 are after using it. -- Dennis KA6FUB |

Yes that is COM18, I could not find any duplicate ports, but with the advice on here I have some tools to play with. The SDRC tool is very clear, I am at work today then 3 weeks off 😊

Talk to the N1MML logger program developer. He has not selected the most reliable way to enumerate serial ports. And just off hand I do not see a duplication in that list. It's not the virtual serial port tool's problem if there really is no duplication present. If there is one it is removable once you know which one it is. All those ports are used, I have a lot of different configurations. However I will remove everything and start again and perhaps have some kind of structure. For instance, all of the S3 virtual ports are 55-57. I should add that despite N1MM+’s protestations everything works in all other applications.

Without looking too hard I see a duplicate COM1 which is most odd as this is usually the legacy port on the motherboard.
I would correctly deinstall all virtual serial port software, check available ports with N1MM, then slowly add them back using only one program, my favourite is com0com. Alternatively check all the software and look at the definitions.
There's at least one program which needs some TLC so that you don't cause this sort of situation.
Try this display in Console, good 'cos it shows the manufacturer (written correctly):

Hello Max, I use VPSE already, the full fat 64-bit licensed version and have used it for 5 years. That does not help me, it is a virtual com port emulator. The problem I have is finding out what is upsetting N1MM+ contest program which insists that I have duplicate com ports.
Too much DX on 6 and 2m to sort this out yesterday but I did download device remover. Meanwhile I just switch off the FDM-DUO and the warning disappears. Windows thinks that there is duplicate port but device manager does not find it.

I have always used VSP Manager. Has worked flawlessly for me. Just be aware needs to run in "compatibility mode" but it's fine. See SImon's info:

I used "Device Remover" to get rid of some of the COM ports in the huge collection I ended up with. It has a GUI but it is not particularly friendly and you need to be very careful what you do with it. Google found me an article about getting rid of hidden com ports. Dave

As this group has a lot of computer savvy people, I hope that you don’t mind me asking a general PC question.
I have a lot of COM ports in use, and I just added the FDM-DUO and I need to use OMNIRIG for WSJT-X etc. This means that I must allocate any real physical comports to numbers less than 20. Despite my best-efforts using Device manager and com-0-com and VPSE I seem to have a clash that stops N1MM+ from opening correctly. I need to re-do everything and document what I have done this time.
Is there an application out there that provides a nice human friendly GUI that shows all com ports virtual or physical?
