Ettus USRP N200 Test with Beta SDR Console
===================================== Ettus_USRP N200 with WBX board fitted running under SDR console (Beta, Jan 2022) and UHD 4.0 driver WBX Bandwith set to 25MHz (in older SDR console version settings of +/- 20 MHz were possible) Hardware performance as per SDR console: Xeon E5-2690 CPU load ~ 8%, GTX1650 (silent card ) load 43% GHz Network (Intel Pro 1000 dual card) 83% load Conclusions: SDR console can easily handle the high data flow.generated by the USRP N200 Reported Hickup's are likely from unsufficienet hardware performance and NOT from SDR console software. ######### Congratulations to SIMON ############### The small s"carrier" below the qo100 NB transponder is likely a DC spike. I would really like to test the USRP X310 with one UBX 160 board, but need help as the default X310 setup is not recognised by SDR_Console.. 73, Charly DF5VAE |

IO will be your speed limiting factor. I've had SDRC
running a full 30 MHz wide USB 3 link to a RX888 and an RX888 MKII
receiver. I hacked a little and got SDRSharp to run happly on the
MKII with a 60 MHz level bandwidth. Going much above that would
probably be a problem with USB 3.1. I've not worked out the math,
though. 120 million 16 bit samples per second is a bit under 2 GHz
data rate. You'd need 10 gig Ethernet to handle it. And a 1 GHz
net would possibly have problems with the full RX888 (not MKII)
bandwidth. These days the Ethernet offered on most computers is
"slow".

With ETTUS the problem is the support dll (UHD.dll). I can’t get my B200 running at much more than 24MHz bandwidth, haven’t looked at UHD.dll for quite a while. The UHD.dll code is by no means optimal, *very* difficult to optimise due to its size and complexity, all unnecessary IMO.
Were I commercial person I would write a new support dll for a specific Ettus device, this may well be the only way to get it running properly.

Simon,
That Ettus X310 is a rather pricey item: USRP X310 - $ 7,013.00 USD. https://www.ettus.com/product-categories/usrp-x-series/ Is it on loan from Ettus? The Ettus X410 is three times the price! What makes this Ettus hardware so expensive? There prices rival Rohde_&_Schwarz. Considering Toyon Research employs Ettus hardware in some of their military products, I'm gussin' Ettus' prices are geared toward the military market (as are R&S): https://www.toyon.com Best regards, Larry WB6BBB On Wed, 2 Feb 2022 07:58:19 -0000, "Simon Brown" <simon@...> wrote: With ETTUS the problem is the support dll (UHD.dll). Mumble mumble.... USB 3,0 was supposed to be about
500 MBps (BYTE/s). So it should support, just barely, a sample
rate of 125 Msps for 16 bit I/Q samples. Is that 24 MHz a limit
only for B200 or for RX888 as well? (RX888 works for me at its
full speed very nicely. I suspect it should work at 60 Msps.
SDRSharp makes it to full MK2 sample rate with an EXTIO driver
pulled from a very old SDRSharp. I am running on a single USB 3.1
controller port with nothing else on the port. That last bit may
be the reason it works so well. (I love those StarTech boards.

I'll believe that. But it was possible that the USB 3
port controller was in some data contention issues. RX888 going
full speed would prove that. That's why I asked.

No, it’s the way the code is designed. UHD is a behemoth.
Were I to have a Ettus for commercial use it’d write a support library for that actual device even though I would have to dig through the UHD code to find out how to do things like load firmware.
I have quite a few SDRs which stream well at 50Msps or more.

Hi Simon,
I have an X310 with GPSD0 installed if you would like to loan it. Or an N200 if you prefer - just say the word and it'll be in the post tomorrow. X310 has multi-rate copper SFPs (1G, 2.5G, and 10G) in each, but if you need optical, I have a number of abandoned SFPs so I might be able to assist there too. It has UBX160 installed, but I have a number of interface cards if you want something else. I have other SDRs to keep me amused in the meantime. Thanks and regards, Erik. |

Erik,
Not at the moment but maybe later. The WinRadio EXCELSIOR Ultra arrives tomorrow.

Either way, it would be my pleasure to loan you a radio to further your cause. Since I have so many, a couple of months loan would be fine with me. Just let me know when, Erik. |

Back in the beginning of February, I sent a message to Ettus Research with your lament for their poor support for UHD.dll. Below is the response I received: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: LDighera@... Subject: Re: Contact Email - Ettus Research LDighera@... From: Ettus Research Technical Support <support@...> Date: Mon, 27 Jun 2022 14:32:58 -0400 HI Larry - Sorry for the long delay; somehow this message got dropped & we're just seeing it now, months after the fact! Thank you for the note. We get this sort of criticism regularly, especially for Windows because that's our lease[sic]-best supported OS. UHD is an amazing piece of software that allows relatively easy addition of new SDRs, whether USRPs or some other type that just wants to be compatible, and new features to existing SDRs. The relative ease means complexity internally, some of which can indeed slow things down while still being amazingly robust. That said, I'd guess even on Windows that one can get better throughput than noted, though admittedly much depends on the CPU (speed, cores, memory) and UHD settings.
