I've just treated myself to a cheap 4K display and a cheap Palit GT730 and I'm now getting to grips with tiny writing etc
Opening SDR Console gave me a super full size picture but a few anomalies.
You can see one problem over on the left (Filter Options) and a second is the drop down menu where the S-Meter options are hidden
No doubt I'll work things out (sitting closer to the screen is one option) but any ideas on the Console issues?

I have eye issues and MUST rely on Windows ability to increase the size of fonts etc so I have a chance of reading them without taking off my glasses and shoving my nose up against the monitor. Your display looks identical to mine WHEN I up the enlargement percentage too high. I have found that I can only increase the size to about 110% before many software programs start overlapping etc. If you have enabled font enlargement try a custom setting just above 100%. Just something for your consideration. 73

Agreed,

Would be interesting to see the font sizes etc., the defaults should be OK, anything set wrongly can upset programs.

That card may also be an issue, do you have the latest GeForce Experience drivers installed?

OK Simon

After reading the explan by Gedas, W8BYA I experimented a little (actually quite a lot)

Windows 7: I’d chosen the setting of 150% in the screen resolution option and various programs had mixed results.

For example Outlook had 2 or 3 font sizes instead of one with that in the Personal folders column too large for comfort and that in messages about right

SDR console was really good except for the font size in the left vertical pane and the upper right drop down menu.

In the former with a large number of option boxes the result was a mess and in the latter the S-Meter options were hidden under the top banner.

I reduced the enlargement figure in Screen Resolution from 150% to 125% (there are three options 100/125/150%) and desktop icons were then too small at normal viewing distance.

I then looked at the Desktop option “View” and chose “Large” from the three Icon sizes (small/medium/large) and SDR Console is now perfect.

Desktop icons are now just the right size from normal viewing distance.

Outlook which I’m now using has Times New Roman font size 12 which was OK in 1920 but is a tad small in 3840 but incredibly clear so manageable.

I guess there’s room for improvement but no doubt things will work out.

The main thing is SDR Console is 100%

Thanks to Covid. I’m signed up to monthly tests for which I get £25 a pop for a few minutes. I gathered up 3 e-cheques and got my new HP V28 UHD monitor for £114 on Black Friday.

The new cheapo graphics card has UHD out at its HDMI and does have the latest driver… I think?

I wonder if Windows 10/11 is able to manage better?

I just spotted the alternative display icons top right Simon.

As my old 1920 monitor is also hooked up I can switch the radio display to that.

Works fine but it doesn’t half look blurry compared with the new one!

Keep up the good work

Sorry to say Allan but as I recall this is all handled quite badly until Windows 10 which handles it extremely well.

Daughter has 4k display 15" laptop. It's pretty much pointless because 15" is far too small to run any apps in 4k (IMO) so she runs it at (from memory) 150% in Win 10 and it's seemless, apart from some older progs (Photoshop CS5 being one) which have menus in illegibly small type, but even these also work perfectly too if run in compatibility mode. Update to Win10 and problems will all go away!

Alan,

I was going to suggest a second monitor (if you have room).

About 18 months ago but I changed the whole office/music/photographic/radio setup and downsized from two computers to one. I kept both 19” monitors though and despite the mismatch, spread the whole desktop between them. I was also able to use Simon’s docking flexibility and split Console across both screens too. That was using Win10E

I have Win 11 H on my laptop downstairs and I love it’s feature of easily switching aps to predetermined configurations. I can work on documents, check emails watch a movie and remote into the office PC and play radio. However, that leaves me with 25% of the laptop display showing a full Console window so back to square one there. Just needs a slider for magnify whole screen or window!

Some of my postings to this and other groups might show very large text. Those are sent from my tablet in the bedroom. This hangs over me on an Anglepoise mount like the Sword of Damocles but the screen resolution and font size are corrected for me to read without my spectacles. Yet another consideration to advancing years and declining vision. I can also play radio from there but with screen limitations. It took me ages to get font size and screen resolution just right. With apologies to members of this group, IRCA, mwcircle, loopantennas, CrossCountryWireless groups for the large text. I’m not shouting, honest!

The TPM for my desktop arrived this week and the plan is to upgrade that to W11. The tablet will remain at W10 due to lack of processing power and a TPM.

Its all good fun though…

OK Tom

All understood

I paid loads for my Win 7 Ult x64bit many years ago and having tried the free embryo Win 10 on other computers I hated it but of course it got much better… (re auto updates for example)

A pal upgraded straight away and it messed up his RAID (which I’d organised when I built his computer). Fortunately I fixed this by suggesting he downloaded the latest version of Intel RST.

As this is my business computer with both hardware and software RAID I’m still a little reticent but I think it should be OK by now because I’ve since upgraded lots of machines… so… I may take the plunge soon.

If it all falls apart it will be a good excuse to retire!

Win 11 is a no-go on my motherboard.

I understand that by changing dpi in the properties of the EXE file in for example an Adobe program it’s possible in the later versions of Win10 to open say PhotoShop in standard HD rather than UHD.

In the meantime if I drag say Outlook or PhotoShop across to my old 1920 monitor its fine. Two 28 inch monitors do take up a lot of room.

Funny thing but the new HP display came with an A5 booklet in 35 languages plus English. All printed in pale grey on grey paper in microscopic font. I could only just read this with a magnifying glass. It said it would meet all FCC specs if installed using the instructions. No instructions included however but it did say in brackets you have to use a screened connector lead and not to operate near to a receiver or a transmitter..

My Andrus SDR is operated over my network so is 80 feet away which should be ample.

Windows 11 (and the older Windows 10 and 8.1) have far more DPI scaling methods than Windows 7. Windows 8.1 was the version that introduced the first high DPI features. High DPI support, aside from a rudimentary scaler, are not in Windows 7 as it has a feature specification from 11 years ago. Windows 7 only allows its rudimentary DPI scaling to be disabled, which is the opposite of what you desire.

Another issue is precisely what Simon mentioned. It is quite possible that the video card driver for Windows 7 does not provide for sufficient support for high DPI monitors. Or the video card itself does not provide the support. Overall, you could just be on hardware and/or software that does not fully support high DPI features.

Of particular interest are the following high DPI modes:

  • PerMonitor
  • PerMonitor2
  • DpiUnawareGdiScaled

PerMonitor2 is the newest and preferred method. It has the nice feature of letting monitors with different resolutions mix-and-match, so the application can scale properly on, for example, a 1080p and a 4K monitor when you drag the application across monitors.

Some of these modes require the software developer to enable the mode or to tweak the code in certain ways. Other modes are automatic and work with any application. In short, high DPI monitors are far better supported with a current version of Windows.

Details can be found in this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/hidpi/high-dpi-desktop-application-development-on-windows

I believe that the Console application is written in C++ and uses GDI+. While geared for the developer, this BLOG posting from several years ago shows some options that can be performed by altering the properties on the shortcut.

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsdeveloper/2017/05/19/improving-high-dpi-experience-gdi-based-desktop-apps/

You may need to experiment with the High DPI options that can be tweaked by the end-user in a modern version of Windows. For example, choosing the System (Enhanced) option can go quite far to allowing a DPI-unaware application (i.e. an application where the developer has not added any support for high DPI monitors). This can be highly useful as one typically needs to run a high DPI monitor with font scaling in the range of 125% to 200%.

Allan. There may be one key word you missed in my post that you may find helpful. You are not limited to just 3 default enlargement settings. There is a custom setting (with a slider) where you can select and % you want to try. With some trial and error I zero'ed in on what works on my WIN 7 and WIN 10 machines.

But note you cannot be remoted into the PC you want to change to be able to make these changes. You need to be sitting in front of that PC. Here I am remoted into my bigger PC downstairs as I use a laptop upstairs in my recliner. You can see there is a custom setting but it is grayed out. Hope this helps....it did for me.

Allan,

Despite building computers since the 286 and being an IT consultant with MCSE and CCNA qualifications for over 10 years, I would be reluctant to mess around with any flavour of RAID!

I certainly wouldn’t like to try an in place upgrade. I would be making a couple of backups of the data and doing a fresh instal of the OS then restoring the data having rebuilt the RAID.

Fresh installs are a PITA though. The OS is the easy bit. It’s the apps and settings and other hardware that becomes the problem.

You could also try building a totally new PC, leaving the old one as a “server”, accessing your data over your network. Then build a new RAID in the new PC, before copying your data across.

I like to get value for money and my retiring PC was built around 2011. Still works and I may yet drag it out of retirement for another project!

Good luck if/when you upgrade.

Sri for the OT reply but I was nodding my head up and down when I read ur post Tom. I still have fond memories of my true IBM PC running at a whopping 4.77 MHz (and cheating by adding my own clock doubler), then when I moved up to the 80286 I remember splurging only $300 for the 287 math co-processor. Wow we were big "stuff" back then when I could run an antenna analysis in half the time that only took 7-8 hours. My how times have changed.
