SDR Console with Airspy R2

George Stein - NJ3H

Greetings.

I hope someone can help me with this issue.

For the first time I am using my R2 with SDRC.  I want to get it working to use with the satellite capability in SDRC.

As you can see on the attached pictures, it appears that there is too much gain.  Where in SDRC is a setting to cut back on the RF gain.

I have also attached a picture of the R2 using SDR# for comparison.

Please let me know if any other screenshots would be helpful.

Thanks for the help.

Regards,
George

To a degree you are comparing apples and oranges. Zoom SDRC out all the way so it is showing roughly the same bandwidth as SDRSharp. Then don't cut off the edges of SDRC in your pictures. The edges contain interesting information.

Make sure in your definitions that the sample rate is set to 10 Msps. That''s called "Bandwidth" in the select radio dialog and definitions:

I (perhaps rashly) presume that is the same AirSpy R2 on the same antenna. For comparison's sake showing the gain settings on the AirSpy R2 would be helpful, I wish Simon showed the zoom factor on the status bar or the header bar. In general I get the same performance in practical SNR terms on both programs. I do get a whole lot more of the AirSpy performance on SDRC with its matrix and multiple receivers.

Hi JoAnne,

Thanks for your reply.  The new SDRC picture is at 10 MHz bandwidth.  The new SDR# is at 8 MHz bandwith.  The audio has a lot of hiss in it using SDRC, while SDR# is crystal clear.

Yes I am using the same antenna.

So I am looking for the gain control in SDRC?  I just haven't found it yet.

I finally found the setting.  Need to clean my glasses more often.

Any suggested settings to maximize reception and quality using Console will be appreciated, JoAnne.  Have you used the satellite capability in Console as of yet?

Thanks,

George

I find I have to run the gain on my R2 at 15 to 17 to get reasonable signal strengths, and clear reception.
Here's the FM band on a 2M/440 antenna up 50' on my tower:

You are running SDRC at a substantially higher gain, I notice. (10 vs 6.)

George,

  1. Adjust the contrast (RHS), just click [Auto], this will help a lot, then post a screenshot.
  2. Adjust the range with the Low and High options which are shown when the mouse is moved over the spectrum / waterfall.
  3. You seem to have a lot of gain which I can’t explain – the Liner gain setting of 10 is good. It may be noise, the new screenshot will help.
  4. SDR# shows relative to full scale, a different concept.

Hi Simon,
thanks for your reply (and for the one about satellite height as well)

Hopefully the attached picture will help.

All the best!

This looks OK to me although I use the dBm scale for broadcast rather than S units.

Ribbon Bar, View, Spectrum, Scale.

Also adjust High and Low a bit…
