Console V 3.0.21 freeze ups
Hello,
I have been having problems with this fantastic software doing a stand still or "freezing up" after about 3 or 4 minutes of inactiviity in the program. This has been happening for some time, and I have been putting off writing this so as to not disturb Simon's more important issues. However, I have tried everything I can think of to find a solution. For example, if I stop to listen to some music for a bit or waiting during a recording, then it happens. This started when I began using my new RSPdx with the software, while prior to this I was using an Airspy Discovery with no problems freezing up at all. It even happens with the lowest setting of bandwidth or even low gain settings. Once the program freezes up, I have to click on the stop button in the tool bar to release the freezing and then click play again. If this is caused by something I am doing incorrectly, I would love to know what I can do to make it stop. Thanks! -- R, Nick N6LPO |

Just a shot in the dark, but have you checked your Power settings under Windows Settings?
Screen Save to NEVER (Mine set to 5 minutes and not a issue with freeze ups) Sleep Mode to NEVER while plugged in. 73 Kriss KA1GJU |

Nick, have you reinstalled the API
(SDRplay_RSP_API-Windows-3.06.exe) or the ExtIO
(SDRplay_ExtIO_RSPdx_Installer_1.0.exe). I have had zero problems
now that I am now using a faster pc but with my laptop an I5@2.4G
I had problems when running other software at the same time (video
programs - Zoom, OBS). Not enough CPU horsepower or overtaxed the
USB, both.

I have an i7 3.4Ghz with an Nvidia GPU and 16Gb of ram and it locks/stutters/lags when I'm running 2 VFOs, VAC, WSJT-X and GridTracker. It's not my power settings, it's not thermal throttling, it's not a lack of CPU, GPU or memory (all of that stays below 20% utilization). It's not USB bandwidth, USB 3.0 ports all 'round for a max sample rate of 768Khz with an Airspy HF+. This is a gaming laptop, it runs Unreal Engine 4 games 1920x1080 at 60fps so it's not my hardware, it's something in Console (I suspect the WASAPI audio, I never really had a problem until I wasn't able to switch between WASAPI to the other option that was available but has been deprecated). HF+ and do some comparison testing. If anyone is interested in the older builds, I can make them available.

Same goes for me David with my i5 and issue 3.0.20 My SDR makes a grumbling stuttering noise when the number in the little box labelled “Audio” rises to 100s of milliseconds. It seems to happen quite randomly when nothing else significant is running with CPU at 1% and GPU 29%. The Audio figure will suddenly move up from 61mS to say 294% with the increase lagging the stutter. After a bout of stutter the Audio drops back to 61mS or less.. I tried opening and closing applications but the audio number doesn’t change, but opening a website will make the Audio figure rise maybe 10mSec. Basically, nothing I do causes the stutter to start… it just happens. I also note that at random CPU will drop to 0.1%, GPU 17% and Audio 41mSec. Very puzzling, but it doesn’t really bother me. Nick, I have a RSPdx and had some lock-up issues a while back. My problem was caused by updating the SDRPlay software (applications, EXTIO, driver, etc.). I did not disconnect the RSPdx when I installed the updates and ended up with multiple copies installed. My fix was to uninstall all SDRPlay software from the system, disconnect the RSPdx, reboot and then reinstalled the SDRPlay software. Only connect the RSPdx when instructed to do so by the installation. After that I have been trouble free.

For grins and giggles: Tools->Options->Start check the "Boost priority...." check box and restart the program. (Restart MAY not be necessary but let's be thorough.) Does this alter what happens any?

I reinstalled the API/ExtIO as you stated, rebooted and waited. Sure enough, the freeze happened again after about 15 minutes. Then after stopping and restarting, five minutes later it froze up again.

Checked all power settings, reinstalled API/ExtIO, checked screensaver settings, etc. All is normal. @Dennis, I only have a single instance of SDR Uno on my pc and directions were followed correctly when installed. I appreciate everybody's replies. I am out of ideas... This pretty much makes Console unusable for me, unfortunately, as I cannot foresee when the freeze up will happen.

Nick,
One thing to check – make sure the USB settings don’t remove power from external devices when switching to Sleep mode etc. This option is part of the Windows power settings.

I tried Boost Priority but no luck, then increasing buffer from x2 to x4

still with no luck. I looked at Task Manager, Resource Monitor and found Audiodg.exe suddenly demanded a lot of CPU power when Outlook was opened and I highlighted an email and selected Reply. Once Audiodg.exe neared the top of processes using CPU power the audio buffer rapidly filled up and SDR stutter started. So is that the answer? Why would Audiodg.exe start using CPU when I initially select reply to an email? Once I'm replying to an email the buffer gradually drops to normal and selecting another email then Reply does not result in Audiodg.exe using CPU. Allan G3PIY -----Original Message-----

Once Audiodg.exe neared the top of processes using CPU power the audioAllan It seems to be a problem. Google finds things like this https://thegeekpage.com/fix-high-cpu-usage-by-audiodg-exe-in-windows-10/ 73 Alan G4ZFQ |

Enable or Disable?

Are you running 24 bit audio by chance? I was and dropped it to 16 bit and it seems to run substantially smoother now

Thank you for the tip, Simon. I am confused, though... Do I enable (like in the picture), or disable? I just checked the setting in my laptop and the setting was enabled. Also, thanks, David Jackson, I will check the audio settings... but it that in Console or Windoze...?

Here is another screen shot of the frozen Console, after disabling USB Selective Suspend and changing audio from 24 bit to 16. This freeze occurred about 25 minutes after making aforementioned changes. I am stumped...the laptop resources aren't even strained when this happens...

Audiodg.exe is part of Windows. It is known for going overboard. There is a fix, supposedly, at this site:

https://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-audiodg-exe-high-cpu-usage-windows-10 (Warning HUGE URL) This is Microsoft's answer to the problem: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-pictures/audiodgexe-uses-extreme-amounts-of-memory-and-is/d2202857-0a63-4aa4-a278-2e97e6377bee Unfortunately it is not necessarily a fix. This is another Microsoft note about the problem - for Win 7 era machines. (This has been around a staggeringly long time!) https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2670667/handle-leak-occurs-in-the-audiodg-exe-process-in-windows-7-or-in-windo And THIS Microsoft answer basically suggests shut down any audio enhancements: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/audiodgexe-error-in-windows-10/d83c17d6-8daa-4325-8935-b5712fa2883e Some hints exist that this traces back to a dll Audiodg uses, ctapo32.dll. It is supplied by device driver code. So make sure you have the very latest drivers installed. (And hunt down the old "stuff".) {^_^} On 20200402 02:49:52, Allan Isaacs wrote:

With no context I cannot see what you are referring to. And I lack the patience to use a web interface.
