There are differences in windowing techniques. You have a tradeoff between spectral bin leakage, sidelobes and resolution.

This may make no difference if all you are doing is looking at strong signals and don't care about high accuracy. But for more demanding uses like looking at small signals near a strong signal or phase noise of a signal, it can be important.

OK, didn't know whether "Youssef" windowing was unique to the HF+, especially as I know nothing about it.    I haven't seen big differences using different windowing for the same receiver, but maybe, when there is a moment, same windowing for both SDRs being evaluated?

Again appreciate your work on this.

best wishes,

Nick

understood...but why is "Youssef" windowing being used for the NetSDR?....that's what comes up when I click on the NetSDR screenshots...

Thanks again.

Hi,

This is the FFT Windowing, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_function Youssef is the brains department at Airspy, he designed his own algorithm. It’s really something for the CW / very narrow signals.

Quick question, probably indicating how far I am out of my depth.....but the couple of NetSDR displays I looked at in your link used "Youssef" windowing, which I don't know about.....whereas the HF+ displays used more conventional windowing.

Why "Youssef" windowing for the NetSDR please?

Thanks.

Nick
