Windows 10 WARNING
Leif Asbrink
Hi All,
There is a very serious problem with Windows 10. It seems Microsoft is trying to avoid problems with incorrect drive routines - but the way they do it is VERY problematic. If a user made a mistake and installed an incorrect driver, Win 10 will never forget even if you remove the bad driver and install the correct one. The behaviour is very non-transparent and frustrating and I think it is a bug in Win 10. If one makes a mistake on the driver install (perseus is my test case) it can be corrected by removing drivers and associated programs until zadig shows that Windows can not find any driver. Installing the proper driver with zadig using perseus.cfg then makes Linrad work. But only partially. If I press 'X' (close perseus) and then 'B' to open it again the system would hang. BUT if I rename linrad.exe to linrad1.exe it will work properly. The operating system is somehow associating an incorrect driver to my program. I tried CCleaner but it did not help. I think this might be relevant to the problems people experience when running Perseus under Windows 10. 1) Make sure to remove all old drive routines for perseus. 2) Install the correct driver with zadig using perseus.cfg 3) Rename your executable from SDRConsole.exe to SDRConsole01.exe (or whatever.) I am not a Microsoft Guru. Presumably there is a way to make Win 10 forget everything about a specific program. Having to give it a new name is so stupid:-( The above is carefully tested with Linrad which uses dll files from a specific location. My linrad.exe does not work, but if I rename it to linrad1.exe it works perfectly well. That is under Win 10. 73 Leif |

I had also some issue with win10 at the beginning (insider) . It seems me some MS told CCcleaner does not work well with win10 . I was suggested to use wise registry cleaner, but always to download the latest one. I do not know if this may help, anyway 51 es 73 , Augusto I2JJR HB9TZA Il 21/10/2015 02:01, Leif Asbrink

In my Windows 10 it was not enabled by default. But it is always best to make a restore point before any installation, sometimes done automatically but make sure. Yes, there seem to be several things in Windows 10 that require attention. 73 Alan G4ZFQ If one makes a mistake on the driver install (perseus is my test case) |

Leif & others,
I am using a utility named 'UninstallTool'. You will be surprised, by using this tool, to find that many entries in the registry in in directories left over by an plain unistall - and removed by this tool. Just by using the utility instead of going to the control panel and uninstalling will clean up the mess. Even better, this UninstallTool allows you to do a monitored installation. Every file and registry entry is stored and if you uninstall later on with the tool *everything* is removed. MS registry is still a 'black hole'. In fact, any software can write to different places in the registry, either to set parameters, or to write 'hidden' parameters for licenses. In fact, they are not hidden, just simply on places and with values one can not bring into relation with the installed software. Bug or feature ??? 73's de OE1MWW Wolfgang |

Leif, this explains the trouble I experienced recently when installing the Airspy and had audio stuttering. First when you plug the Airspy in the pc it installed the drivers from its own library, but when I installed the modified drivers from Youssef nothing changed. Now the Airspy on my laptop with the clean W8.1 install works perfect as the desktop with W10 is still stuttering from time to time.
Is there a relation with the Perseus and Airspy drivers with Zadig? 73' Ron on2ron |

I have not followed what happened with Airspy. I think there is new firmware as well as a new dll, but I do not think the drive routine has been changed. I do not know details, but I think perseus, rtlsdr, softrock and all other USB use the same WinUSB from Microsoft that Airspy is using. The difference is that the Airspy contains the code that makes Windows understand while everyone else has to install libusb-1.0 which somehow interfaces between the application program and WinUSB. So yes, there is a relation, they all use WinUSB - but they do it completely independently as far as I can understand. 73 Leif Leif, this explains the trouble I experienced recently when installing the Airspy and had audio stuttering. Wild and Crazy Notions Department - No. 28763 -
SOMETIMES THE ORDER IN WHICH WE DO THINGS MATTERS. Some hardware devices must be connected before we install its software drivers, while other devices must not be installed until AFTER we install its drivers. For example, my super high speed, commercial grade, duplex document scanner must be connected to the computer partway through the installation routine, or it will not work properly. In contrast, some drivers will not load properly unless and until the hardware is connected. So, I wonder whether at least some of the installation problems mentioned in this group could be avoided or mitigated by changing the order in which we complete the various steps of the installation process. Just MY take, anyway... your mileage may vary. Happy Trails - ------------------- K8JHR ---------------- On 10/22/2015 11:49 AM, on2ron@...
