Re: HF+ Comparison

There are differences in windowing techniques. You have a tradeoff between spectral bin leakage, sidelobes and resolution.
This may make no difference if all you are doing is looking at strong signals and don't care about high accuracy. But for more demanding uses like looking at small signals near a strong signal or phase noise of a signal, it can be important.

I haven't seen big differences using different windowing for the same receiver, but maybe, when there is a moment, same windowing for both SDRs
being evaluated?
Again appreciate your work on this.

Re: HF+ Comparison
There’s a list of options for Windowing, for some reason I had Youssef selected on the NetSDR.

Re: HF+ Comparison
Hi,
This is the FFT Windowing, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_function Youssef is the brains department at Airspy, he designed his own algorithm. It’s really something for the CW / very narrow signals.

Quick question, probably indicating how far I am out of my depth.....but the couple of NetSDR displays I looked at in your link used "Youssef" windowing, which I don't know about.....whereas the HF+ displays used more conventional windowing. Why "Youssef" windowing for the NetSDR please? Thanks. Nick

Hi, I can't seem to edit the favorites data in SDR-Console – v3.0 preview 6 . The menu drops down and new frequency data can be entered but it doesn't retain the new values. Randall, KM6LPW |

Well if the HF bands are that bad then am I correct in assuming that you will be testing the Airspy HF+ on 2m EME rather than going to the pub?

Re: HF+ WX Reception
Well,
I would say ‘quite possibly’ – I’m sure MDS is better and dynamic range also. I must use the NetSDR’s downconverter to be sure of this. Prior to the HF+ I’ve been using the Airspy R2 which I’m sure is a tad better than the NetSDR+Downconverter.

It's getting colder, reception is getting better, it's getting more and more time for release. Hopefully mass production is ramped up before Christmas that some of the dark days of November can be spent signal hunting. When is it coming already! Let's smash F5 some more... |
