Re: Interference (how to approach interference hunting)

bill K7WXW

If you are going to embark on a RFI noise hunting project, here are a couple of hard-earned lessons I will share:

Characterize your SDR, software, and related equipment (laptop, power adapter, USB cable) without an antenna, across the bands of interest. Do this for each antenna port. Make screen captures. Keep constant, and make note of, your software application settings.

Why? Your SDR and laptop will create artifacts, noise, and ghost signals due to internal clock signals, power supply noise (even on a battery) and interactions between the software and SDR hardware. If you don't know what and where these are, you will end up chasing noise sources that are in your test equipment.

Install BCB and FM band stop filters.

Why? SDR front ends are incredibly easy to overload and when they do, they will create images of signals up and down the bands. My RSP2 had commercial FM station images down to 2Mhz and BCB staion images well into 24MHz.

Turn down the RF gain and turn off the LNA.

Why? Overload, again. For the most part, any noise signal that needs a lot of RF gain or an LNA isn't a signal you will be worried about.

Capture noise data two ways: using your every day antenna and a short telescopic antenna, especially at lower bands.

Why? This gives you a way to see which noise sources are more likely to be outside your house. It will also show you which signals are likely to be the most important to find and fix as a signal that shows up on the small, inefficient telescopic whip along with your everyday antenna is likely to be quite powerful.

Run a full range of captures over all of the bands of interest, using your everyday antenna, and a consistent set of SDR software/hardware settings (the ones you used to capture the no-antenna images) at several points in the day.

Why? Noise signals are rarely there "all the time".  Keeping the same settings for this step lets you visually compare your no antenna screen captures with this set and eliminate signals that are likely artifacts of your SDR system.

Finally, consider setting up the SDR software to capture really bothersome signals over a period of a day or so.

Why? The patterns of appearance and disappearance holds valuable information for identifying signal sources like solar power systems, grow lights, and plasma TVs.

Like I said, all hard learned lessons. I made, and continue to make, every mistake possible!  73 Bill K7WXW

It would be nice . I still think Icom should hire Simon and have his work standard with Icom radios. Aside from my 7619 , I should ordered a IC 9700. Another that will surely need Simon

Thanks.

What is the status of SDRC supporting the 7610?
Thanks.

Hi Dennis,
It might be worthwhile switching off the power to your house completely at the main switch and do some checking with battery powered kit.....

As far as I know you still need to download and install CW Skimmer. The CW decode option on SDR-Radio adds support to get the signal out to the skimmer.

I did this but for some reason enabling the "CW Skimmer" option seems to make my copy of SDR Radio stutter very badly/freeze. I'm running a decent high spec i7 with loads of memory so not sure why, but had no time to look at it. I am not running the very latest version of SDR-Radio yet. It might work OK for you!

I downloaded the first Realtek drivers offered to me, UAD I think.  In debian linux, when I wipe clean the whole hard drive, I don't worry about drivers.  In Windows, this is a mistake.  The drivers are stored in recovery partitions.  Windows gives you a set of drivers, but in my case they were incomplete for the motherboard.  I am not entirely sure what I am talking about, on this subject.  The original restore to factory backups cd's are useless now with Windows 10, I think.  But, they gave me an indication that I had originally had Realtek audio drivers.  The Windows 10 reinstall gave me only NVIDIA drivers.

Hi Bob,

If it’s showing this behaviour with the lowest sample rate in 3.0.5 then at the moment I can’t offer any suggestions. I’ll carry on thinking…

Yes, I have tried both 3.0.5 and 3.0.6, but thank you for the suggestion.  Both versions have this behavior.  I have also tried several sample rates including the lowest.
If I try changing the Realtek driver, do you recommend the UAD or HDA version?  I am not very familiar with the difference.

Implementing access to both the Rx1 and Rx2 inputs (LNA L, LNA H and LNA W in both) in SDR-console definitely calls for a dog food and beer contribution! A long sought for function. Keep on the fabulous work, Simon!
