Re: FM Stereo DXing

Hi,

I see the problem when using a remote receiver – there is a delay between changing frequency and the received IQ (SDR) data matching the new frequency. The console knows the new frequency but for ~ 300ms is decoding data from the previous frequency.

The easiest way around this is to optionally add a delay option in the RDS logfile – so when you change frequency the logfile is not updated until you have been on the new frequency for 500ms.

Thanks for adding RDS logfile functionality, Simon! It may be very usefull for checking data from a DX session afterwards.

It seems that RDS logfile logic isn't working properly yet as phantom rows are generated very much when changing frequencies. RDS data from previous frequency is bleeding into the next entry before the actual RDS data from a new frequency is decoded. RDS log file attached. You can notice these false lines from a small PI Code # in this file, although just a few PI code decodes could be a valid entry of course as well.

Another note is that this new RDS logfile functionality is designed currently for one QTH use only. Practically, that is... As one is forced to change Home Lat/Lon manually for every remote SDR server used so that is very often!

Kriss, I was using your online SDRplay for my first RDS logfile tests with 3.0.8. Thanks!

I just checked the functionality of stereo recording again. The problem is still there with the new version 3.0.8.

I suppose when receiving in strereo (Receive / Broadcast FM / Options / Audio selection: stereo) the recording should be made in stereo (i.e. with 2 audio channels) all the time despite of loosing stereo sync from time to time with weak signals. Likewise if reception is set to mono, the resulted audio file should be in mono all the time. It's creating multiple audio files currently in a situation when weak signal changes it's state between mono & stereo.

Is this difficult to fix? I was expecting this to be fixed for 3.0.8 as this new version has some improvements on FM broadcast band reception.

David and Leon, yes - that's another matter, a pilot tone is just a pilot tone and doesn't necessarily tell the true case of the signal transmitted. Despite of existing pilot tone, the transmitted audio can be in mono in a real world.

Thanks for your interest

Dear Simon et al,

After upgrading to version 3.0.8 I have a weird problem.

When changing the LNA setting to manual under the "radio" column on the left side, my TM-2 doesn't change it's frequency in it's display but the tuning knob still works.

After pressing stop and then press play again.

The TM-2 frequency is showing the correct value.

Any idea?

Re: Pluto & SDRconsole no power on TX? #pluto

@DG7YEO

Hi Jugo,
thank you for your hints, I did get it working in the mean time, did it very similar as you describe. But I have to low TX power. Checked with an old R&S URV4 which  is spezified to 2GHz only, so values may not acurate. With 2 tone or CW continues carrier I get only about 27dbm (500mW). Enough to hear my test with Two-Tone but not enough for SSB, as well not enough signal level vom Microphone, but this is an issue with my Microphone.
As well I need to start vmix to get a clear transmition, otherwise I have TX drops. Anyway first test was successful, now wait for an other amplifier between the Pluto and the WiFi PA to get bit more power and parts to get more stable frequency.

Simon,
great software and good support here !!
Thank you !!

hi all,

i have done the same tests with a pluto, and it is the same thing.

i think all are pll's harmonics.

more the frequency is hight, less are harmonics.

i think, when i monitor the pluto tx with rdc (full duplex) the receiver is overload.

i work also with adf4351 and  have the same problems in small frequencies. (integer or frac) . better above 1ghz but PN remains poor .  in the pluto, the PN is better then in an adf4351.

Hi Fred

I’ve just done some tests on Lime Tx using SDR Console V3.0.7,

Computer Asrock B250M with G4560 processor, Windows 7 Ult x64

Transmit Frequency set to 52MHz

Mode USB, Drive 100%

Spectrum analyser DSA815TG set to 52MHz, span 1MHz with 20dB attenuator between Lime TX1 and input

Press Transmit

I see a clean signal 52.25MHz at -25dBm

Press Tune

I see three clean signals 51.75MHz at -45dBm, 52MHz at -6dBm, 52.25MHz at -42dBm

Press Tune and I see just 52.25MHz at -25dBm

Press Transmit to revert to Receive mode and no RF output.

The SDR display shows a 52MHz signal only when Transmit is pressed followed by Tune.

Level displayed is -43dBm with noise base at about -105dBm

If I use LSB I see much the same results. Transmit and Tune, 3 clean signals

52.25MHz at -42dBm, 52MHz at -6.6dBm and 51.75MHz at -44dBm

Switch off Tune and I see just 52.25MHz at -32dBm

Once in Transmit and Tune the signals are all stable with no obvious change in amplitude.

I’m powering the Lime from its twin USB3 connectors. If I plug in a 9 volt PSU I see no difference in performance.

Is this similar to what you see?

I have an RX-only setup at the moment running SDRC and an RSP1A & RSP2. Would you be able to move the USB-relay option into a general menu so that this can be used in RX-only setups? (I don't see the USB-relay menu and I am guessing it is part of the TX section that I don't see). I was hoping to use my USB-relay boards to activate my antenna switch and also power on my rotator controller, among other things. Moving towards remotely managing my station.

Would this be possible?

Hi Simon,

thanks for 3.0.8 release.

after some tests with my pluto  this afternoon it seems more stable, fine : for both computers hard cleaning (uninstal, folder supp and ccleaner for registry)

computer 1 (hp laptop 2.8ghz 4gb ram  w10) :  tx still bursting , no burst with vmix running in back side.  small carrier remain even in rx mode -85bdm.
idem last release for me.  full power in usb tune mode -3.6dbm in 2m.

screenshot  hp:

computer 2  dell laptop 2.5mhz  8gb ram w7 64b :

no burst in tx mode, no need of Vmix this time, some time rx freeze a little at the begining , but ok.

BUT, very low power  (same position as above) is -65dbm. great difference between the 2 computers.

an other strange thing is the external radio window that stay instead of a clear install. i tryed in the previous installation to drive an external ft817 with cat (succesfully).

on both computers omnirig is installed.

screenshot dell :

where am i mistaking?

thanks for help.

While I'm sure that would normally be the case, in my situation the Nvidia GPU should never be called into that duty since the Intel GPU handles all of that but I suppose somewhere - because of Nvidia's stupid Optimus crap - that's probably what's happening since there is no way to disable the Quadro entirely. It's not a discrete GPU as they used to be on older laptops and newer gaming models, sadly.

The Intel GPU should be handling all 2D and 3D duties unless I explicitly assign the Nvidia GPU to kick into action using Nvidia's Control Panel. Perhaps I'll tinker with that and maybe find a way to get it decoupled.

Thanks for the response, and have fun, always...

w00t!!! That fixed it. I added SDR-Radio to the Nvidia Control Panel and told it to use the Intel GPU exclusively and now there's no coupling of the Quadro:

Hi there,

First off my sincerest thanks for the developers and of course Simon for his tireless efforts on making SDR-Radio such an amazing piece of software - your efforts are truly appreciated by all of us.

On to the meat and potatoes:

I've got a ThinkPad W540 laptop, it has an Intel i7 processor in it which does have the Intel HD 4600 GPU on the die, but as it's a workstation class laptop I also have the Nvidia Quadro K2100M GPU (based on the Geforce GTX 730M. I need to say now that I have no issues with this setup using Windows 10 LTSC 2019 (I have legitimate licenses because I do remote tech support). Everything works, and I'm not making this post to complain about anything at all.

Having said that, here's my concern:

Because it's a workstation laptop it does tend to run a bit warmer when doing things, and the Nvidia Quadro GPU heats up fairly quick. In the options for SDR-Radio there is of course the checkbox to enable or disable the CUDA offloading for the FFT and it is unchecked (by default it was checked and I unchecked it). The Statistics info in the lower right hand corner of the waterfall clearly shows me that I'm using IPP (the Intel GPU) and that's fine too.

Problem is, the Nvidia GPU is still being called into duty for some reason and I can't figure out what's doing that. The Intel GPU is more than capable and powerful enough to do the FFT duties as required and it does so in a much cooler manner as well meaning the cooling fan in my laptop rarely has to kick into action. But if the Nvidia GPU is part of this that fan is always on and quite noticeable.

According to the Task Manager the Nvidia GPU is being called into action:

https://imgur.com/7NV8ftg

If it's at all possible by way of a command line switch or if there's a setting somewhere in the voluminous options (which is not a negative, nope) where I can totally decouple the Quadro GPU from use by SDR-Radio I'd be grateful to learn how to do that. I mean I can and will continue to use the application exactly as I have for a while now because it's awesome and it has no real issues, but decoupling that Quadro from it would sure help keep things running more efficiently and using less power, and of course quieter as well even though I wear headphones when monitoring anyway.

Thanks for your time, and again, thanks for making SDR-Radio the awesome and highly useful tool it's always been.

Have fun, always...
