Re: Softrock Support

John G4SWX

Hi,

I really DO like the SDR-Radio kits - I have been running a USRP 1 and a GNU Radio interface driving LINRAD for some time and have also played with a web version based upon the WEBSDR. I am aiming to build a set of remote VHF beacon receivers based upon modified Softrocks.

The first thing that I have done is to run up the Remote server(currently on a dual core 3.1GHz XP SP3 machine)with a Softrock v9 on 40m. I can run a console on the same PC or another PC on the local LAN and now, after a couple of firewall changes, from the Internet.

I can log-in and operate over the Internet; but on the SDR-Radio remote server list I get the icon for having a firewall issue. Do this down to the way that I am running the server in a DMZ and using NAT?

The main problems I have revolve around the interfacing of the remote server and the E-Mu 0202 USB soundcard. I have used the 0202 as it is probably the best performer for modest money and possibly the 2nd or 3rd most popular with the sound-card based SDR community. I have run the remote server up with a Delta 44 and there were no issues at 96KHz sampling although at lower rates I sense, from the familiar bangs and pops it is suffering from wrong buffer length/latency issues on the input audio streams. On the E-Mu 0202 I have now established that although the presence of the card is detected by the sdr-radio software the interface to change the sample rate doesn't work. This is a particular problem as the 0202 defaults to 44.1Khz sampling when it starts without a sample rate being selected by a software application. Therefore attempting to change the sample rate on the remote server with the console causes a console conflict and the software to hang...

Otherwise, even when sitting on the same LAN with a high performance 2.6GHz dual core PC console I am noticing a several second delay between the Waterfall display and the sound output. Often around 4 seconds it makes tuning around rather difficult. I understand why there is a significant delay in deconding the sound but could the effects not be mitigated by introducing a variable delay in the spectrum display.

Great start but a few bugs to go

Options Pane

Hi All,

(I bet this gets wrapped)

In the Photos section I have created an album http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sdr-radio-com/photos/album/1352727940/pic/list where you see a screenshot with a new Options pane. I find the toolbars to be hard on my eyes, yesterday I started an Options pane which I'll finish this evening. The whole thing will be fully configurable, you can use toolbars and / or the Options pane and also select what's shown in the toolbars.

Configuration of the UI is very important and part of the whole SDR 'expereince'.

Yes, I will start this when I return from my holidays.

Also the whole radio / SDR will be controllable via the remote server.

Maybe there is too much development info is out there about the SDR-RADIO SW, so I am confused.

Is there a plan to implement control of various receivers like Icom R-8500 with SDR-IQ (with RS232 so like with Spectravue) using IF out to be able to monitor 2m/70cm or airband, so basically to be able to use full coverage of the receivers?

Softrock Si570 control- Solved!

Ken , VK7KRJ <vk7krj@...>

Having a spot of lunch today and thinking about the problem, a thought suddenly struck me- how about I put the new version on to the remote machine as well! Aarrgh- sometimes I wonder about me!!!!!!

It all works beautifully now- excuse me while I go and stand in the corner for a while with my dunce's hat on...

Thanks Simon for what is a great piece of software- and with the addition of manycasting on the server, it will be near perfect.

Great Software and some comparisons

davidjmessing

Hi Simon... Great Software, downloaded it Sunday evening and when I saw the Shortwave Broadcast Stations database, I was blown away.

Last year I started with the Elektor SDR and G8JCF software. Then went to Winrad and three weeks ago purchased the RFSpace SDR-IQ.

Some things I like on Winrad that I would like to see options in the program.

I like the more crisp wave forms in Winrad and SpetraVue, more like that of an oscilloscope. I notice a tall solid vertical base in comparison to the actual height of the wave. Its more difficult to analyze the wave. Could choice be added to get a different view of the wave?

In Winrad AM a bandwith over 5kHz can be selected, and the ECSS really makes AM sound awesome. Can a bandwith for AM be extended above the 4kHZ?

Just curious if drivers for the Elektor will be added??

Over the years I have several different photo editing software packages, each are used, depening on what has to be done. I see this with SDR software.

I love the new software, but miss some of the items I mentioned. Plan to keep them all on the computer.

Softrock Si570 control?

Ken , VK7KRJ <vk7krj@...>

Hi all, the latest version of the console gives the impression of being able to control the Si570 on a SoftRock, is this only for a local SoftRock- I can't seem to get it to change the frequency of the SoftRock v9 on my remote computer?
When I go into Input Source, Options, SoftRock Support, it is blank and pressing refresh doesn't do anything.
At the moment, I am running Rocky on the remote computer (it's not very remote- it's on the bench next to the computer running SDR-Radio) to change frequency.
Am I missing something, or is the remote side of Si570 control still to do?

Also Simon, on the latest version, when I move the slider on the lower frequency scale, the upper frequency scale doesn't change to match the new centre frequency any more. However, when I hover the cursor in the main window, the frequency display in the top centre of the main window shows the correct frequency, as does the digital display on the top right.

Other than that, it just keeps getting better.

Re: Hello all

Hi,

Simon's SDR console can add memories and recall them so it won't be a big deal to switch the SDR-IQ input to the FT-950 pigtail and recall the IF setting for panadaptor use and then switch the SDR-IQ input to an antenna and use the SDR console for a shortwave radio.

Simon said that a next revision of HRD would have an SDR-IQ mode so you would have your choice of several control surfaces to use.

As an aside, the forum didn't seem to get a lot of input.... this Yahoo group seems to be a big hit!

FB ...

The radio from Australia/Nik I think you mean the Genesis http://genesisradio.com.au. If you are going to do the G40, G160 and G2030 which are fixed frequency LO and sound card only they will be a lot like the earlier Softrocks, but with TX using COM ports so same logically as a V6.2 Softrock RXTX. However Nik has included a nice add on in the design of image supression capabilities in the hardware a link is here http://www.genesisradio.com.au/G40/10assemblyG40.html for those who had not heard about this. I think you mentioned you might do/have done some of this in software but this might be worth noting. The Genesis G59 is a USB but PIC not AVR controlled Si570 so a different firmware is used but I think is based on the http://home.ict.nl/~fredkrom/pe0fko/ExtIO_Si570/ dll that winrad expects. I asked Nik if he would have api doc or hex available and I'd build a skeleton interface to check but it isn't available and I am already building too much in too little time.

Maybe someone else in the group might be able to give you access to a G59 or LD1?

Let's see - I should be able to feed the TX I+Q back through the receiver to check the quality of the TX data, so for the time being I'm OK. For me to text the TRX I'll use the MOBOKIT.

The TX plans are:

1) Actually generate I+Q for TX

2) Provide full MOBOKIT support

The MOBOKIT could be a very exciting transceiver :)

I'll then add TRX support for other radios such as Lazy Dog and Nick's radio from Australia. But first I have bugs to fix and from May 3rd to 17th I'm away on holiday as GD4ELI.

After I have finished obtaining the LPF output TX figures from it for Tony Parks and boxed it up I will probably not use it again until after the summer so do you want me to send you the finished Ensemble Softrock RXTX I had built? The one I built was for 80m/40m so should be fine for EU. It will have the save firmware as the V9.0 RX you have and the TX/PTT control is the same as a V6.3.

Alex sent me a Mobo V4.3 and Widget Lite (USB Audio, Alex just achieved Stereo with the firmware code so SDR use should be just around the corner now) to build for you complete with a set of mini filters so should have those boxed up with the 4x20 display, fan (will use a 1U copper CPU 12V fan) and rotary controller ready for Freidrishafen 2010. It will look similar to the pictures here http://sites.google.com/site/lofturj/softrock6_3 with a plastic control knob and a 4x20 LCD display. I'll either pinch one from a Pic-A-Star build as using a 320x240 display on that or order some from a Chinese electronics place and it will be in in a week or so. You OK with black on green or want another colour combination?

SDR-Radio Server frequency variance

I was connected to an SDR-IQ UK server today, and tuned to 198 Khz. No "big signal" from Radio Four. I found Radio 4 up around 192. Then I connected to another SDR in the UK and BBC Radio 4 was on 198. Would frequency really vary that much ?
