The problem with diode limiters is that they generate spurious signals due to non-linearity in the diodes. So this reduces the spurious free dynamic range   (SFDR) of the receiver.

Sometimes several diodes are placed in series or a saturation transformer is used to reduce the spurious level while still providing some receiver input protection.

A switch is a better option and can be activated by the Send or PTT line from the transmitter.  However in multiple transmitter sites like contest stations or for Field day operation this may not be possible and a diode limiter is a low cost option.
