I also struggled for a long time with a distorted microphone audio. In the end I found a solution that always works well for me (the names are based on the Dutch Windows 10 version): Go to the Configuration screen > Manage audio devices > Select the Record tab > and finally reset each audio device to the default settings via Properties-Advanced.
