Try turning off AGC. That always raises my noise level up by about
10 dBm. On AM broadcast (550 - 1500 kHz) I have to set manual gain
below 3.7 dB to prevent overloading causing audio distortion and
that may be mostly a characteristic of my RTL SDR dongle. With the
Visual Gain control you can make the S-meter and waterfall look like
whatever you want.

Good afternoon,
This has probably been covered somewhere, but I can't find it.
I am using SDR Console, with an Airspy (early model) and
Spyverter.
I was comparing signal levels with my KX3 today. When I removed
the antenna on the KX3 (or switched the dummy load in), the
S-Meter would go to zero. When I put the Airspy and Spyverter (or
just the Airspy alone) into the same antenna circuit, the baseline
would be S3 to S4, no lower, even when the gain controls are
zeroed out.
Why is this? Is there an adjustment for minimum S meter that I
have overlooked, or is the nature of the system to show a high
background noise level. I would like to experiment with the gains
to make the readings approximately the same between the two
systems.
